Cathy Peterson has been a Farmers Insurance agent since 1997. Her dad started with Farmers Insurance in 1991 and enjoyed it so much he approached Cathy about starting her own agency. He told her that Farmers was very family oriented and if she started her own agency he could transfer his agency over to her when he retired. And that’s how Cathy’s insurance career began!
The Best Part of Cathy’s Business
Cathy said she works with many wonderful clients and one situation in particular still makes her tear up every time she thinks about it:
During the 2003 wildfires, I had one client that was evacuated. His house was fine but it had a lot of smoke damage. His deductible was $2500 and at the time it was difficult for him to come up with that. After all was said and done, Farmers sued SDG&E for the cause of the fire. With the settlement we received Farmers refunded all our clients their deductibles. When I called my client to let him know he had a check to pick up, he was in tears because he didn’t know how he was going to pay his upcoming renewal premium on the house as he was still out of work. Being able to help people like this client is why I love the company I represent!
The Hardest Part of Owning a Business
Cathy said that managing employees is by far the hardest part of owning a business. And, “it’s really difficult to find someone that will treat your clients the way you want them to be treated”. Because there are 100 different insurance carriers, Cathy says her agency needs to stand out. If her employees don’t understand that then the agency will lose business.

- Cathy specializes in educating people about Business Insurance and Life Insurance. And then helping them with their policies when they decide what is right for them. She says that some business owners don’t understand the importance of making sure they have the right coverage. And that the old saying, “you get what you pay for” even applies to insurance coverage.

- Cathy feels that Customer Service is key in her industry and therefore her agency goes above and beyond day-to-day customer service by:
- Advising clients at least 30 days before their renewal if there is any kind of premium change because they don’t want the client to be surprised by an increase.
- Calling every client in January just to say, “thank you, we know there are a lot of choices and we appreciate you and your business”.
